"Hurt" is a song past American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails from its second studio album, The Downward Spiral (1994), written by Trent Reznor. It was released on Apr 17, 1995, equally a promotional single from the album. The song received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Song in 1996.

In 2002, Johnny Cash covered "Hurt" to commercial and disquisitional acclamation. The related music video is considered one of the greatest of all time past publications such every bit NME. To film the video, a scrim was dropped in front of the band on phase, projected onto which were diverse images to add visual symbolism to fit the song'due south subject matter, such as war atrocities, a nuclear flop test, survivors of the Boxing of Stalingrad, a ophidian staring at the photographic camera, and a time-lapse moving picture of a flim-flam decomposing in contrary. Since the 2005–06 Alive: With Teeth bout, Ix Inch Nails has been playing "Hurt" in a more toned-downwards style, featuring only Reznor on keyboard and vocals until the final chorus, when the rest of the ring joins in.

The song was brought back to its original course during the Lights In The Sky tour in 2008, before returning to the toned downwards way on the 2009 Moving ridge Goodbye bout.

In 2002, Johnny Cash covered the song for his album, American Four: The Human Comes Around. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash'due south life and directed past Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and CMA Awards, and the best video of all time by NME in July 2011.[xiv] The unmarried contains a cover of Depeche Mode'south "Personal Jesus" as a B-side.

Cash's cover of the song had sold ii,148,000 downloads in the The states as of March 2017.[15]

Groundwork [edit]

When Reznor was asked if Cash could cover his song, Reznor said he was "flattered" but worried that "the idea sounded a bit gimmicky." He became a fan of Cash's version, still, in one case he saw the music video.

I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt similar] I just lost my girlfriend, because that vocal isn't mine anymore... It really made me retrieve about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, near a bleak and desperate identify I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds upwardly reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically dissimilar era/genre and all the same retains sincerity and pregnant – different, simply every bit equally pure.[xviii]

Mike Campbell (acoustic guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano, organ, mellotron) of Tom Trivial and the Heartbreakers played on the rail.[19] Smokey Hormel too played guitar on the track.[20]

Music video [edit]

The music video was directed by former Nine Inch Nails collaborator Mark Romanek,[21] who sought to capture the essence of Greenbacks, both in his youth and in his older years. In a montage of shots of Cash'due south early on years, twisted imagery of fruit and flowers in various states of decay, seem to capture both his legendary past and the stark and seemingly roughshod reality of the nowadays. Much of the video is in a way deliberately reminiscent of vanitas paintings, thus emphasizing the lyrics' mood of the futility and passing nature of human being achievements.[22] [23] According to literature professor Leigh H. Edwards, the music video portrays "Cash'due south own paradoxical themes".[2]

Romanek had this to say about his decision to focus on the Firm of Greenbacks museum in Nashville:

When the video was filmed in Feb 2003, Cash was 71 years old and had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly axiomatic in the video. The house where Cash'due south music video for "Hurt" was shot, which was Cash's domicile for nearly xxx years, was destroyed in a burn down on Apr 10, 2007.[28]

  • The Johnny Cash version has appeared in several films, documentaries and Television shows including Colombiana, Criminal Minds, Smallville, Inside I'm Dancing,[37] Person of Interest and Why We Fight [38] in add-on to the teaser trailer for the Curiosity motion-picture show Logan.[39] James Mangold, the director of Logan had previously directed the Johnny Greenbacks biopic Walk the Line. The song does not appear in the moving-picture show proper, with the film instead opting to use Cash's "The Human being Comes Around" over the ending credits.
  • ITV Sport used this version in a montage of England's exit from the 2006 FIFA World Cup afterward losing a punishment shoot-out against Portugal. One montage scene showed David Beckham visibly shaken and emotional for not being able to play due to an injury during the lucifer, being in tears at one bespeak .[40]
  • Sky Sports also used a section of this version in a montage of the 2013–fourteen Ashes series following England'south 5–0 defeat by Australia.[41]
  • During the edition of Nov xiv, 2005 of WWE Raw, WWE used the song for their tribute show dedicated to Eddie Guerrero following his expiry from heart failure.[42]

  • Leona Lewis covered the song in 2011, featured on her extended play Hurt: The EP.
